Evaluation of Malaria Control Activities Implementation in Équateur Province, Democratic Republic of the Congo: Analysis of Fourth Quarter 2024 Supervision Data
Abstract
Introduction
Malaria represents a major public health burden in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), particularly in Équateur Province, where environmental and logistical conditions complicate intervention implementation. The National Malaria Control Program (PNLP) deploys prevention, diagnosis, and treatment activities there, with quarterly supervision serving as a key monitoring and evaluation tool.
Objective
To assess the implementation of malaria control activities in Équateur Province through the analysis of data from the fourth quarter 2024 supervision, and to formulate recommendations for improving program performance.
Methods
A descriptive and evaluative study, combining quantitative and qualitative approaches, was conducted among 30 supervisors and healthcare providers from six health zones in Équateur Province. Data were collected through documentary analysis of supervision reports, semi-structured interviews, and direct observation. Frequency analyses, percentages, chi-square tests, and odds ratio calculations were performed.
Results
80% of supervisors were over 30 years old, 60% were male, and 53% had less than ten years of experience. Training on PNLP guidelines covered 68% of providers, but 50% reported recurrent stockouts of supplies. Only 30% of providers received feedback after supervision. Coordination with technical and financial partners was rated as very good by 80% of supervisors (OR = 9.0; p = 0.04). The main gaps observed concerned logistics (43%) and availability of supplies (63%).
Conclusion
The implementation of PNLP activities in Équateur Province shows notable strengths in terms of training and coordination, but remains limited by structural weaknesses in the supply chain, post-supervision feedback, and data utilization. Targeted actions on these leverage points are needed to improve the program's impact.
